Death Penalty Day

Death Penalty Day

Dear All

To mark the 8th World Day Against the Death Penalty today, we would like to share with you some facts about the use of the death penalty around the world.

Although many countries have officially abolished the death penalty, or do not use it, 58 countries still uphold and regularly use capital punishment.

Last year, over 2000 people were sentenced to death in 56 countries around the world. The numbers are shocking, but behind them are the stories of individual prisoners who have been denied justice and are facing death. These are the people Reprieve's lawyers and investigators have been fighting for since 1999.

Among them is Linda Carty, who has spent 9 years on death row in Texas. Last week was her 52nd birthday, but she may not see her next as she faces imminent execution.

Thank you for your support.

P.s. We are delighted to announce that Reprieve’s Director Clive Stafford Smith has been awarded the prestigious Beacon Prize for visionary leadership in human rights, a prize described by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown as the 'Nobel Prize of the charity world'. Click here to read more.
